Kintsugi Continuing Course 2, 3, 4

  • 7s Art Labo 36 East Broadway, Fl2 New York, NY, 10002 United States (map)

This continuing course is designed for students who have previously completed our Introductory Kintsugi Workshop and would like to deepen their practice of traditional urushi kintsugi.

Available Sessions:
Sunday, May 17 · 6:00 PM
Saturday, May 23 · 6:00 PM
Sunday, May 31 · 6:00 PM

Participants may bring up to two already bonded or chipped ceramic pieces to continue their restoration journey. This course is best suited for those who already have pieces that have been bonded with urushi, or ceramic items with chips that are ready for repair.

If you have not taken our introductory workshop but have prior kintsugi experience, please contact the instructor in advance to confirm whether this course is appropriate for you.

What You May Work On

Because each ceramic piece is different, the focus of each class will depend on the condition and repair stage of your item. With individual guidance, participants may learn or continue one or more of the following steps:

  • Filling cracks and small missing chips

  • Sanding and surface refinement

  • Applying the middle lacquer layer

  • Gold finishing

  • Reviewing the bonding stage, if needed

This is a small-group class designed to provide personalized instruction and hands-on support.

What to Bring

Please bring up to two ceramic pieces that are already bonded with urushi or have chips suitable for repair.

Participants who wish to continue work from a previous kintsugi class are welcome to bring their in-progress pieces.

Important Safety Note

This workshop uses urushi lacquer, the natural sap of the lacquer tree. In its uncured state, urushi contains urushiol, the same allergen found in poison ivy, and may cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in some individuals.

Gloves will be provided, and safety instructions will be given during the workshop.

If accidental skin contact with urushi occurs, participants agree to immediately massage the affected area with plant-based oil, then wash thoroughly with soap and water.

This workshop is recommended for participants age 16 and above. It is not recommended for individuals with severe urushiol allergies.

By signing up, you acknowledge the potential allergy risks associated with urushi lacquer.

About The Instructor

makomako is a New York-based professional Kintsugi artist. She is recognized for her expertise in restoring ceramics and diverse materials, including porcelain, Yixing clay, bamboo, agate, jade, and glass, using natural urushi lacquer and precious metals such as pure gold. Each repair is both functional and poetic, transforming fractures into visible landscapes of memory.

Her practice is rooted in traditional craftsmanship, drawing from training under renowned urushi master Gen Saratani and further studies with master artisans in Japan and China, and urushi tapping in Joboji, one of the few regions in Japan where natural urushi is still harvested.

Her works have been exhibited in Contemplating at Ease (theBLANC, 2023) and IROHA Lake of the Heart (CIBONE Brooklyn, 2023). In addition to private commissions, she leads workshops and collaborations, sharing the quiet philosophy of wabi-sabi and the enduring spirit of Kintsugi with a wider audience.
