Intangible Cultural Heritage Hand-Painted Lacquer Fan Workshop

Led by artist Kevin Ge, this hands-on experience not only introduces the floating lacquer method but also integrates elements of Chinese painting and calligraphy. You’ll explore brush techniques, basic strokes, and how to incorporate poetic or symbolic motifs into your design—making your fan a truly personalized expression of East Asian aesthetics.

No prior experience needed—our instructor will guide you step-by-step. All materials are provided, including fan surfaces, lacquer pigments, brushes, and tools. At the end of the session, you'll take home your finished lacquer fan and a deeper appreciation for traditional Chinese artistry.

Agenda:
Welcome & Introduction:

  • Learn the cultural background of floating lacquer

  • Brief introduction to traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy

  • Overview of materials and design samples

Hands-On Creation:

  • Demonstration of lacquer marbling and brush techniques

  • Guided fan decoration using lacquer, painting, or calligraphy elements

Finishing Touches:

  • Final sealing and drying tips

  • Participants take home their completed fans

Q&A and Community Time:

  • Ask questions, share designs, and enjoy a creative space with fellow participants
